On Thursday 15th of February 2018
National Society for Democracy and Law carried out a workshop entitled” The Role of Law and Media Institutions in Supporting the Women Issues.” In the association in Rafah with in the project of “Protection of the Life, Rights and Dignity of Women in the Southern Gaza Strip” and with the support of “Sawasya ” UNDP/UN Women/UNICEF Joint Programme : Promoting the Rule of Law in the State of Palestine. The participants were law and media persons and representatives of the civil society in Rafah.
Mr. Hamad Hejazi, a lawyer in the association, opened the session welcoming Ms. Olfat El Bream, executive director in the National Society for Democracy and Law, Ms. Laila Almudallal, the director of South Women Media Forum and the participants.
Ms. Olfat El Bream talked about the role of the law institutions in supporting the woman issues. She pointed out the role of legal clinic and its services which presented to the vulnerable groups She addressed for the clinic services like the free representation of women in the courts in the different Sharia issues, society mediation and overcoming all issues which specialized to vulnerable groups in the Ministries, such as Social Development Ministry and Local Government to provide with the needs and the basic services to the needy cases as women. She added the mechanisms of supporting women through awareness sessions, lobby and advocacy campaign, radio program episodes and documenting and publishing the violations in particular women violations.
Furthermore, El Bream emphasized the important of the partnership between the National Society for Democracy and Law and the partner institutions such as Awn Networking and the referred system to some cases from and to these institutions.
She referred to some statistics to its services presented by the association to the women in the last year. Finally, she mentioned at some successful stories recorded to the association work in favor of the women.
Ms. Laila Almudallal talked about the role of the media institutions in supporting the woman issues. She pointed out the shortcomings and lack of the role of media in supporting the woman. She clarified the absence of gender quality at addressing the women issues, employment process and distributing media tasks.
Media often distorts the image of the women and weakens their role. In addition, media magnifies the role of men as a result of the customs, traditions and view.
The media became male- dominated and took away the majority of woman rights. She criticized establishing huge ceremonies at National Woman Day and
she asked for shifting its costs to support and empower the woman. She also asked for preparing cadre of gender based media professional, the sense of the women issues and involving the women with a greater participation at media and political life.
She pointed out the mechanisms for supporting women from the media institutions such as plans from these institutions, training cadre for the gender based media professional and showing the gender gap and reducing it.
She called for a clear Islamic view to the media women condition and the rising the awareness of the importance of woman role. Moreover, she suggested establishing media departments at all the official institutions and the civil society institutions taken into account formulating equal representative to women and supporting the female youth studying Media.
At the end, the discussion was opened to the participants. The participants asked important questions to the speakers. The workshop recommended the following:
1- Development of a media strategy based on a well-studied plan aims at changing the common negative image about women in the media.
2- Looking at the women issue as an integral part of the society issues.
3- Change the prevalent intellectual and cultural atmosphere about women.
4- Operationalizing the partnership between law and media institutions for supporting the women issues.
