Shouka Legal Aid Clinic No.9 at the National Society for Democracy and Law (NSDL) organized legal awareness workshops within “Emergency Legal Assistance to the Affected People in Rafah Due to the 2014 War on Gaza Project”, supported by UNSP/PAPP, which provides legal aids to the vulnerable and the affected groups due to Gaza war 2014, which comes within the series of legal aid projects, which established Legal Aid Clinic No.9 within, to support the vulnerable groups legally.

The legal clinic organized these workshops in the sake of providing legal aid to these vulnerable groups to the affected people, especially the forced displaced people who are at the evacuation centers, where more than 1600 people dwell, in addition to illustrate the followed legal procedures in order to extract replacements of the lost evidential and personal documents for the affected and the destroyed houses, in addition to rights to inheritance, alimony, guardianship of orphan underage children who lost their parents during the last Israeli war on Gaza, divorce cases occurred within the war and how to overcome this phenomenon, and aware the people to their rights.

Mr. Hossam Jarghon -project coordinator- opened the workshops welcoming the attendance and giving a brief introduction about the project and its main goals embodies in providing legal aid in its three forms (legal awareness rising, legal consultation, legal and judicial representation) to the vulnerable and the affected people due to Gaza war in Rafah.

The legal clinic organized 6 legal awareness workshops in the period between Nov. 23 and Nov. 27, 2014, include workshop at Ibn Khaldoun Evacuation Center in Kherbat Al-Adas neighborhood, seconed, at Al-Shouka Evacuation Center in Al-Shouka neighborhood and the third workshop was for girls at Rafah prep school for girls “B”. And 3 workshops at Attadamun society – in Alshaborah, Kanda neighborhood society -in Tal-Al-Sultan, and at Mohammed Al-Ameen Mohammed mosque in Kherbat Al-Adas neighborhood. The subjects of these were about Personal Status Law, and Guardianship’s Matters of Nursery, justice and courts system. 160 girls of the vulnerable and affected groups due to Gaza war 2014, include 59 women of the forced displaced people dwell at the evacuation centers until now, and 19 girl of Rafah prep school for girls “B” attended these workshops. The team of the legal clinic, which include 11 advocates, headed with Mrs. Suad Al-Mashni led these workshops talking about post-war effects and consequences, especially destroyed houses, leveled agricultural lands, martyrs, injuries, familial problems, and economic problems which aggravated after the war and led to the deterioration of the financial situation that led to problems between cables because of the inability of satisfy their basic familial needs.

Within these workshops, within these workshops, the team of the legal clinic focused on discussing the social problems, the aggravated suffering after the last war, and communicates with the attendance in the sake of providing legal aid for in whole their social and familial problems that needs to legal aid. On the other hand, the attendance raised several problems the seek to solve with the aid of the team of the legal clinic at the society, which include problems among families at the evacuation centers due to their different customs, traditions, disarray of lands’ and buildings’ borders after leveling, and lack of water and coverlets, especially after the coming of the chill cold atmosphere while they dwell at the evacuation centers.

Mr. Belal El-Najjar -a volunteer advocate at Legal Aid Clinic No.9- also talked about the concept of social justice and how the Legal Aid Clinic promotes this concept through its activities.

At the end of these workshops, the attendance expressed their interest in the subjects of the workshops and the importance of them, what Legal Aid Clinic No.9 do to support the civilians legally and access them to the basic social services, and then raised several questions and inquiries in the social problems they face at the evacuation center, and the team of the legal clinic answered all the raised questions and inquires.
